My first day in Singapore was a very productive one. It started with a press conference for the World Street Food Congress 2013 then a few hours of shopping and eating with my cousin, followed by a wonderful river cruise and ended with a seafood dinner featuring some of Singapore’s most famous dishes.
Eros, our Singapore Tourism Board guide, brought us to Jumbo Seafood at Dempsey Hill. I really liked the vibe and atmosphere of Dempsey Hill. I will definitely go back there to explore the other stores and restaurants.

I almost never drink beer but since it was hot and humid I eagerly chugged the mug of ice cold beer wholeheartedly.

Eros ordered the most familiar Singaporean dishes and I was glad he did since I was able to compare Jumbo’s execution with the dishes I’ve tried in Manila. I would say Tao Yuan in Manila did a pretty good job since the food pretty much tasted similar.
Everyone literally ate the sweet crunchy cereal with a spoon and topped over the fried rice. The prawns, barely recognizable under the mountain of cereal, were plump and perfectly cooked.

You can’t go to Singapore and not eat chili crab. I was relieved that the crab wasn’t too spicy. The sauce was really tasty with a touch of sweetness and just enough heat.

When you order chili crab you MUST order fried mantou (siopao dough without filling) to sop up all the yummy chili sauce. I was shy to ask Eros to order another plate of mantou.

I must say I enjoyed the seafood fried rice the most. The rice was soft and just a little sticky. The best part was it was loaded with fresh seafood and it wasn’t greasy. Add a spoonful of cereal and some chili crab sauce and it’s a meal on it’s own.
