Help for victims of typhoon Pepeng!

I received this bulletin from the Ayala Foundation USA. I know we’re all wrung out from helping out the victims of typhoon Ondoy but let us not forget the victims in Northern Luzon specially Pangasinan and Baguio.

Appeal for Help for the Victims of Typhoon Pepeng!

Even while Manila and the surrounding regions are still reeling from the effects of Typhoon Ondoy, another typhoon pummels the country. Typhoon Pepeng (international name: Parma) unleashed its fury on Northern Luzon just a week after Ondoy wrought havoc on the nation’s capital.

If the rains brought about by Ondoy triggered massive flooding, the heavy rains that accompanied Pepeng triggered massive landslides, consuming entire towns in a deadly cocktail of mud and rocks.  The worst of the overnight landslides appeared to be in remote Benguet province, where 120 people were confirmed killed in five towns, said provincial governor Nestor Fongwan. As of October 12, 2009, the death toll from Typhoon Pepeng has soared to 270 according to the Cordillera Regional Disaster Coordinating Council. About 45,000 families or 220,000 have been affected by the disaster. Thirty-eight (38) towns and 3 cities in Northern Luzon are still paralyzed by floods, rendering them nearly impassable.

The storms that have battered the Philippines one after another have left so many overwhelmed. The past three weeks have indeed been so difficult for the country, so once again we are appealing for help for our fellow Filipinos affected by the succession of tragedies. While we have already dug deep into our pockets for the victims of Ondoy, let us not forget those in Northern Luzon. Now that the need is greater than ever before, we ask you to please find it in your hearts to extend your generosity even further.
