Sunday Lunch at The Century Seafood Restaurant

We liked the food the last time we ate at Century so we returned for Sunday lunch.

All the dimsum were good but the fried shrimp and mango roll was outstanding. It was different from the usual dimsum fare.

fried shrimp & mango roll

We liked the Wagyu steak cooked the Chinese way. The steak was cut into cubes and stir fried with onions and green peppers. The steak had more flavor and remained very tender. Eating it this way is also good for portion control.

Century has a secret technique on preparing canned abalone. You won’t find abalone as soft as this anywhere. The abalone literally melts in your mouth. Sauteed lettuce is under the mound of sliced abalone.

sauteed pechay

This is our current favorite fried rice. It’s filled with dried scallops, dried shrimp and sliced asaparagus. It was really full flavored and not oily. You have to try this. It was so good we ended up ordering more for take home.

You can’t tell from the picture but this is ube mochi. The outer layer underneath the coconut is color purple and it has a slight ube (purple yam) flavor. And inside it is a peanut filling. It sounds like a strange combination but it was good.

I Am Thankful

I am thankful:

For the wife
Who says it’s hot dogs tonight,
Because she is home with me,
And not out with someone else.

For the husband
Who is on the sofa
Being a couch potato,
Because he is home with me
And not out at the bars.

For the teenager
Who is complaining about doing dishes
Because it means she is at home, not on the streets..

For the taxes I pay
Because it means I am employed.

For the mess to clean after a party
Because it means I have been surrounded by friends.

For the clothes that fit a little too snug
Because it means I have enough to eat.

For my shadow that watches me work
Because it means I am out in the sunshine

For a lawn that needs mowing,
Windows that need cleaning,
And gutters that need fixing
Because it means I have a home .

For all the complaining
I hear about the government
Because it means we have freedom of speech.

For the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot
Because it means I am capable of walking
And I have been blessed with transportation.

For my huge heating bill
Because it means I am warm.

For the lady behind me in church who sings off key
Because it means I can hear.

For the pile of laundry and ironing
Because it means I have clothes to wear.

For weariness and aching muscles
at the end of the day
Because it means I have been capable
of working hard.

For the alarm that goes off
In the early morning hours
Because it means I am alive.

And finally, for too much e-mail
Because it means i have friends who are thinking of me.

Bok Marty’s Birthday

2 weeks ago I posted Sherrie’s birthday treat in our office. Today it’s boss Bok Marty’s turn to treat us for his birthday. Since he’s Spanish he treated us to a Spanish lunch. He ordered food from Las Paellas Café at the nearby Robinsons Galleria.

Bok Marty

the spread

Las Paellas serves one of the best paellas in Manila. I’ve eaten in their Alabang and Greenhills branch and it’s always consistently good. I’m happy that even their take out paella is good. The order below is good for 10. 7 of us ate lunch and it barely made a dent in the paella. There was more than enough left overs to make 3 people very happy.

paella for 10 – P1,900.00

We also had this ultra yummilicious Lengua Sevilla. It’s very, very tender ox tongue stewed with mushrooms and olives in sherry wine sauce. The sauce by itself on rice is already a meal. It’s that good. An order is good for 2-3 people.

lengua sevilla for sharing P365

The cakes and apple pie were gifts.

Red Ribbon’s marjolaine cake

This is our favorite – the best apple pie in Manila from Sugarhouse. It also came with a container of whipped cream. The apples were chunky and crisp while crust tasted like cookies. It was truly heavenly. It was the only dessert we didn’t share with anybody.

Mr. Marty gave away half of the cake so we had to put the cute football candles on half a cake. Bok is an avid football fan. He claims to be a football star in his heyday. 🙂

Happy Birthday!!

Niagara Falls in Motion

God’s creation in all it’s wonder, highlighted by technology and captured by a talented man. I’ve never been to Niagara Falls. This video makes me want to see it more than ever.

A soldiers thoughts about Michael Jackson’s death …

I received this in my inbox today.

THIS WAS WRITTEN BY A SOLDIER IN IRAQ

I was just watching the news, and I caught part of a report on Michael Jackson . As we all know, Jackson died the other day. He was an entertainer who performed for decades. He made millions, he spent millions, and he did a lot of things that make him a villain to many people. I understand that his death would affect a lot of people, and I respect those people who mourn his death, but that isn’t the point of my rant.

Why is it that when ONE man dies, the whole of America loses their minds with grief. When a man dies whose only contribution to the country was to ENTERTAIN people, the American people find the need to flock to a memorial in Hollywood , and even Congress sees the need to hold a “moment of silence” for his passing?

Am I missing something here? ONE man dies, and all of a sudden he’s a freaking martyr because he entertained us for a few decades? What about all those SOLDIERS who have died to give us freedom? All those Soldiers who, knowing that they would be asked to fight in a war, still raised their hands and swore to defend the Constitution and the United States of America .

Where is there moment of silence? Where are the people flocking to their graves or memorials and mourning over them because they made the ultimate sacrifice? Why is it when a Soldier dies, there are more people saying “good riddance,” and “Thank God for IEDs?” When did this country become so calloused to the sacrifice of GOOD MEN and WOMEN, that they can arbitrarily blow off their deaths, and instead, throw themselves into mourning for a “Pop Icon?”

I think that if they are going to hold a moment of silence IN CONGRESS for Michael Jackson, they need to hold a moment of silence for every service member killed in Iraq and Afghanistan .

They need to PUBLICLY recognize every life that has been lost so that the American people can live their callous little lives in the luxury and freedom that WE, those that are living and those that have gone on, have provided for them.

But, wait, that would take too much time, because there have been so many willing to make that sacrifice. After all, we will never make millions of dollars. We will never star in movies, or write hit songs that the world will listen too. We only shed our blood, sweat and tears so that people can enjoy what they have.

Sorry if I have offended, but I needed to say it.
Feel free to pass this along if you want.

Remember these five words the next time you think of someone who is serving in the military;

“So that others may live…”

Sunday Lunch at Choi Garden Restaurant

Choi Garden Shark’s Fin and Seafood restaurant is our favorite Chinese resaturant. We eat there at least once a month and usually on Sunday. After 2 years in business it’s still always full.

On weekends or when they have big parties they open up all the partition on the second floor to make it one big open space.
Interesting thingies to diffuse light.
Choi’s has one of the best roast pork in town. Hopefully these pictures will help you decide on what to order at Choi’s and maybe try something new.

They also have excellent dimsum available all day.

I’m not much of a veggie eater but I loved these veggies. The spinach was very tender and the combination of century egg, salted eggs and regular eggs added an extra dimension to the otherwise plain greens.

spinach with 3 kinds of eggs

You must try this totally unique vegetarian dish. Assorted braised vegetables are wrapped with bean curd skin then fried and served with a delicious sauce.

sea moss balls

This is the best lobster dish I’ve ever eaten in a Chinese way of cooking. Fresh lobster pieces slathered with a light cheese sauce on noodles. Yum, yum, yum!

lobster w/ cheese sauce on noodles

This isn’t the best pata tim but it’s not bad. Other pata tim use pork leg. This dish used pork belly that was braised for a long time. It was very, very tender and the sauce was lip-smacking good.

pata tim

The pata tim was served with fried man tao. Man tao is plain siopao dough that can be steamed or fried. We call it Chinese Krispy Kreme because it tastes way better than a glazed doughnut without all the sugar. When it arrives on the table hot pop it in your mouth and it literally melts in your mouth. We don’t bother eating it with the pata tim. It’s that good. You can order this without the pata tim.

fried man tao
Here’s another favorite of ours. Crab meat, eggs and sotanghon scrambled into one delicious dish.

crab meat with scrambled eggs

You put the crab meat mixture in lettuce cups and eat. Different huh?

Choi’s makes the best masachi/mochi. Masachi is the Chinese version of a Japanese dessert called Mochi. It’s made with sweet glutinous flour and filled with a black sesame mixture. You have to try this.

This is their newest dessert. It’s a bit sweet for my taste but everybody loved it.

Food Finds at Metro Gaisano Supermarket

Metro Gaisano supermarket is located at Market! Market! at Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. It has the widest selection of imported products from the USA, Canada and Australia among all the supermarkets in Manila. If there’s something you need no matter how sure you are that you won’t find it try going to Metro supermarket. You will be surprised.

Here are just some of the items that caught my attention. Passion Pasta is a line of gourmet pasta from Australia. According to their web site, it’s the ultimate air-dried small batch laminated pasta that cooks in 3 minutes.

Passion Pasta from Australia

It’s not cheap. I bought the porcini mushroom linguini which costs P187.25 for 250 grams. Other brands of imported pasta cost P60-100 for 500 grams. I haven’t cooked it. But when I do I’ll do a follow up post on how it tastes.

They also have all kinds of food and fruits in the freezer section. Raspberries, cherries and even blackberries are just some of the ones featured here.

Australian lamb chops

gourmet steaks from Chicago

They also have a wide array of healthy food such as steel cut oats and cereals. These cost much cheaper than those at Healthy Option.

They also have McCann Irish steel cut oats which is one of the best in the world (so they say). My favorite healthy cereal is Kashi Go Lean which has high fiber and low fat and tastes good. They sell for P272 a box at Metro and P450 at Healthy Options. Go Lean Crunch is also good but has less fiber and a little more fat.

You should see their regular cereal aisle. You’d think you were in a supermarket in the USA. They have all the kiddie cereals too.

Metro is the only place that carries Sweet Serenity flavored syrups for coffee or tea. This a local product that can compete with those imported and expensive syrups.

Sweet Serenity syrups

They also have an almost complete variety of Arnott’s cookies from Australia. When it’s in stock you have to buy this Tim Tam balls in regular or mint flavor. It’s addicting and so yummy.

The prices of their local goods are higher than the other supermarkets. But the price of the imported goods are reasonable. Next time you’re at the Fort swing by Metro supermarket and make a dent in your budget.

Lunch at Paseo Uno

We treated my cousin Sharon, who came home from the US, to a buffet lunch at Paseo Uno at the Mandarin Oriental hotel. I haven’t eaten there in a year. I was eager to see what’s new.

I was glad to see Paseo Uno has maintained it’s nice decor. It still looks fresh and new even though it’s been at least a couple of years since it was rennovated.

The lunch buffet of Paseo Uno costs P1,473.00 net or US$ 31. If you have a Mandarin hotel card you’ll get 50% off plus your senior citizen discount of 20% off and you get a great deal.

As with any hotel buffet in Manila, you will be inundated with a plethora of choices. I like their clean and minimalist display of food.

They have shrimp & fish tempura cooked to order.

red curry of duck & pineapple

crisp fried chicken

The main course dishes were served in small quantites. I like their ‘cook less more often’ approach. There’s less wastage for the hotel while the guests get freshly cooked food.

potato puree w/ parmesan and bacon

roasted lamb leg w/ eggplant caviar,
balsamic, rosemary & confit tomatoes

steamed broccoli w/ roasted garlic &

I was amazed that the roast beef had the typical sidings such as baked potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. I tried a small piece of beef and it was good. So was the Yorkshire pudding with gravy on top.

I probably tried only 20% of the food in the buffet. It was generally good. There were enough choices for the most discerning taste buds. Good thing dessert wasn’t that great or else I would have overeaten again. If you haven’t been to Paseo Uno in a while it’s time to give it another try.
