I’ve passed by Ootoya Japanese restaurant (right beside Imperial Hotel on Nathan Road) so many, many times I never thought of trying it. I thought it was a very expensive restaurant. I was wrong.
I didn’t know that Ootoya is a popular chain with 288 branches in Japan and 74 branches around the world. They have 2 branches in New York!
They had everything on the menu from udon, tonkatsu and all kinds of familiar and unique Japanese food at friendly prices.

We ordered something unfamiliar to us like this tiny Sakura shrimp with eggs on rice. Too bad it was very bland. It needed some kind of sauce to be palatable.

On the other hand the tofu soup that came with the set was very flavorful and thick from eggs.

My ox tongue was not as tender as what I’m used to in Spanish dishes but I enjoyed the simple seasonings which brought out the taste of the tongue. It was even better with freshly squeezed lemon juice.

A few pieces of grilled chicken on really, really good white rice. Rice and udon seemed like a strange combination. Carbs and more carbs.
Maybe we ordered the wrong things? I’m willing to give Ootoya another try.
