Google Me

When I started this blog I didn’t know a thing about SEO, Google visibility, etc. I thought once the blog was up and someone makes a search on Google my site will come up. This was not the case. It took a lot of tinkering, learning and pinging for my entries to show up on Google. So from time to time I do a search of Shoot First Eat Later just to see what comes up. I found this Google result so funny.

Lunch at People’s Palace

People's Palace-8

We had an impromptu lunch at People’s Palace today. Thanks to Pat’s carpenter who didn’t arrive thus starting a chain reaction that led to our having lunch for no reason at all.

With only an hour’s notice and several text messages these are the classmates who made it to lunch. Some are supposed to be at work, some have errands to do, some just wanted to have a beauty day but all dropped everything to have lunch. We are just so easy!
People's Palace-2

People’s Palace is a Thai restaurant in Greenbelt 3 that has been around for a long time. It’s my first time to eat here. It’s a bit pricey and the servings are small but the food is good.

This was my favorite dish. It tastes just like Laksa. It’s a bit spicy and the curry is made with coconut milk.

Their phad thai wasn’t as pretty as Azuthai’s but it’s pretty good too.

This chicken curry was very mild. It’s perfect for those who don’t like hot curries.

All the desserts we ordered were fabulous. My favorite was the chocolate cake which initially tasted dry but it had a dense and moist center. The flavor was deep and dark just the way I like it.

This has got to be the most sticky rice in one order that I’ve ever seen. It was so good although some of the mangoes were very sour.

Deb was right. This was the creamiest, lightest panna cotta we’ve ever eaten.

Cow Label

Here’s a blast from the past – Cow Label. This used to be a popular snack item when I was a kid. That was many, many years ago. It’s still around although not as popular. I haven’t eaten this in decades.

The packaging hasn’t changed at all. There’s 10 packs inside a box.

Each pack has different labels on each side. Fancy!

The only thing new is this nutritional information which I hope isn’t correct. 860 calories for a serving!! What?!? I hope it’s 860 calories for the whole box which will make it 86 calories per pack and 8 calories from fat? This is giving me a headache.

Cow Label is dried beef similar to beef jerky. But in this case it has a sweet, mild chili sauce. The beef is hard and chewy. It’s still finger licking good. The serving below comes from 1 pack. I doubt anyone who opens this will stop at one pack.

Gloria’s $15,000 dinner at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse

Good grief! All the heat about her $20,000 dinner at Le Cirque hasn’t even died down and there’s another report from The Washington Post of her group’s dinner at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse, a restaurant in Washington DC. At least this time it’s for 65 people although no one knows who paid for the $15,000.00 meal.

Check out Manolo Quezon’s in depth report on all her wining and dining in the USA.

Beijing Hand Pulled Noodle House

Beijing Hand-Pulled Noodle House is the newest restaurant along J. Abad Santos st. in San Juan. It’s right beside Tofu store where I buy the best taho.

It’s a small and simply decorated restaurant. I went there around 2 p.m. today that’s probably why the place was empty.

They have an open kitchen where you can watch them make the noodles. Too bad I wasn’t there at the right time.

There’s two huge stock pots containing the soup stock.

I took home an order of dry special beef noodle as recommended by the waiter. The noodles were a tad too soft for me but the taste wasn’t bad at all. It was mediocre at best. The beef was very tender though. The serving was very generous for the price of P105.

They gave me some soup on the side. The beef soup was very flavorful and had a clean taste. It was devoid of fat and scum present in some clear soups.

These are lamb dumplings. I’ve never seen lamb dumplings in Manila. They’re pretty common in Beijing since they eat lots of lamb there. I didn’t like the dumplings because of the strong lamb taste. The dough was good and firm but there was too little filling inside. I felt like I was eating flour dumplings. I hope the pork dumplings taste better.

 P120 for 15 pieces

Their menu is very limited. I hope they offer more variety in the future. This restaurant isn’t going to garner rave reviews. But if you want a bowl of hot noodle soup that’s tasty and affordable then this restaurant is for you.

Crepe de Chine

This morning a friend of my dad’s visited him in the office and gave him 2 containers of food from her daughter’s restaurant, Crepe de Chine. Naturally my dad showed it to me and asked if I wanted to take pictures of it. He knows of my obsession for taking pictures of food.

I’ve never heard of Crepe de Chine since it’s located in Binondo, Manila. I almost never go to Binondo since it’s so far and I always hear of really bad traffic stories. I didn’t have any expectations when I opened the styro container. It didn’t look so good. I didn’t even know what was inside the crepe. When I took a bite I was very pleased with the soft crepe and the burst of flavors and textures that assaulted my taste buds.

I opened the crepe and realized it was salad inside a crepe. It had lettuce, grilled chicken, ham, cucumber, asparagus, tomatoes, pineapple, cheese and dressing. I had one crepe for lunch. It was very filling and satisfying. I never thought of putting salad inside a crepe. It sounds odd but the combination works! It’s a welcome change from the usual creamy savory or sweet and fattening crepes.

The 2nd container had pasta primavera inside. Since I was already full from the crepe I just tried a little pasta. It was very good too. It was a simple dish made from pesto and an assortment of vegetables. The sauce was creamy and spiced just right. The noodles were a tad soft though.

I like the food of Crepe de Chine based on these 2 dishes. I hope they open in Greenhills or Ortigas area or else I doubt if I’d ever get to try their other dishes.

Sunday Lunch at Green Maris Hot Pot

Green Maris Hot Pot is another popular place to eat hot pot in Greenhills. It’s actually owned by Gloria Maris restaurant which is right next to it.

This eat all you can hot pot promo looks interesting. I would order a lot of imported beef to make it worth it.

sauce ingredients

Since we were a big group of 12 we sat in a big round table which had two cookers.

lobster balls

raddish

taro and golden mushroom

wanton

udon noodles and beancurd skin

veggies and fried beancurd

The pot on the right had a two soups – sate and clear. The pot on the left which was near where I sat had only clear soup. I love their sate soup so I had to keep asking people across the table to get for food and soup for me.

marinated beef, chicken breast

This was what Elizabeth got for me from the sate pot. I swear I didn’t touch this.

It became more interesting when I turned my bowl. 🙂

The last time I ate hot pot it was raining and the weather was cool. When we ate here last Sunday the sun was out and we were sweating while eating hot pot. It felt like we were working out while eating. Hmm maybe we were burning calories as we ate? Yeh right. In my dreams! Nevertheless it was an excellent lunch.

Gloria’s $20,000 dinner at Le Cirque

I was shocked to read that our President Gloria had dinner with her party of 28 government officials at Le Cirque in New York and the bill came to US$20,000.00.
New York Post’s Page Six first broke this story.

Read more about it at Manolo Quezon’s blog. This is what Manolo thinks they could have ordered.

Here’s MarketManila’s blog about it.
