Florence:Piazzale Michelangelo (Michelangelo Square)

Piazzale Michelangelo (Michelangelo Square)
After a day of outlet shopping our driver brought us to Michelangelo Square to end the day with some culture.

Designed in 1869 by Florentine architect Giuseppe Poggi, Piazzale Michelangelo offers panoramic views of Florence and the Arno valley and is a popular spot with locals and tourists.

Created as part of major restructuring of the city walls in 1869, Poggi’s sumptuous terrace is typically 19th century. Poggi designed a monument base dedicated to Michelangelo, where copies of Michelangelo’s works, including the David and Medici chapel sculptures from San Lorenzo would be displayed. When the terrace was finished, Poggi designed the hillside building with loggia as a museum for Michelangelo’s works. For some reason, Poggi’s project was not realized as it was intended. The building that was to be a museum is now a restaurant.

Today, the piazza is filled with tourists, vendors, and a bronze replica of Michelangelo’s David. Just remember that most of Piazzale Michelangelo is a parking lot, and one comes here to enjoy the view. It can be reached by taking either bus 12 or 13 from the center or the red two-level sightseeing tour bus. It can also be reached by foot, climbing up from Piazza Poggi found at the base of the hill upon which Piazzale Michelangelo sits. source

I was so surprised to see so much shaved white truffles on Sharon’s carbonara and it only cost €6. This was the first time for me to try real truffles and I was disappointed that it wasn’t as good as I dreamt it would be. It didn’t taste like how it smelled. The pasta was quite dry and bland too. Sha had to douse it with lots of grated cheese to be able to eat it.

We saw coperto in many of our checks. The amounts can range from €.50-4 depending on the restaurant. It’s basically means ‘cover charge’ and is charged per person in the table.

Florence: Outlet Shopping at The Mall & Space Prada

The Mall, Outlet in Florence
For me a good vacation is a fine balance between culture, good food and shopping. If one is missing it doesn’t feel right. The only exception is a beach vacation where I don’t expect any shopping. Luckily my two travel mates are also avid shoppers so dedicating a full day to outlet shopping in Florence was an easy decision.

The Mall outlet was located in Leccio, a province in Florence. We were able to hire a car and driver for €140 a whole day’s shopping and extra tour at the end of the day. The other options were taking a cab, bus or train but time and convenience was the most important to us so a private car was the best albeit most expensive option. The outlet was about 30 minutes drive from our B&B.

The Mall was an outdoor outlet with a lot of high end name brands Dior, Gucci, Prada, Bottega Veneta, Tod’s and many more. We didn’t go in to all the stores just to the brands we liked and hoped to find good deals.

We didn’t go in to Prada anymore since we were going to the bigger Space Outlet after.

I was so disappointed that Bottega Veneta was closed for inventory that day. Balenciaga and YSL was soooo disappointing with their stocks. They didn’t carry any of their classic bags which I hoped to buy.

There was a restaurant and cafe on site.

I was so deliriously happy to find a Lindt store at The Mall. I never ever read about it’s existence when I was doing research. You can bet it was the first store Sharon and I went to. Skinny Rochelle went straight to the stores.

I bought these 72% dark chocolate squares (top) and the cremosi arancia which was dark chocolate with orange filling. Both were so good and I’ve never seen them outside this store. The sales person was kind enough to let me try some samples before buying and it saved me from buying some that were too sweet.

We were successful at Marni, Gucci and Tod’s. We got some good bargains with sunglasses, wallets, bags and shoes. The most expensive thing I bought was a Gucci bag for my mom €300. Everything else was below €200 so I think we got good deals. We were fast shoppers too spending only two hours at The Mall.

After The Mall our driver brought us to lunch (separate post) then we went to Space Outlet which was another 40 minutes drive from the restaurant. Space Outlet carried the brands Prada, Miu Miu, Helmut Lang, Jill Sander, Prada Sport and Church.

It was huge!!!

As soon as we arrived we were given a number each. Do not lose this number because this will be used to identify your purchases when you pay at the counter. I wasn’t allowed to take any pictures inside but we were all able to buy something. The leather wallets were a nice and a good deal.

Florence: Grom Gelato

Grom Gelato-007
To erase the disaster that was our dinner we went to Grom for some gelato. I didn’t know Grom was popular and had branches around Italy, Japan and the USA.

It had lots of people in the store and that meant it was good.
Grom Gelato

Another thing that assured me of it’s quality was the gelato wasn’t piled in huge mounds which usually meant it was full of air. Grom’s gelato were in these stainless vats.

We shared a couple of cups. The first cup was Sha’s choice of stracciatella or cream base with Columbian Teyuna chocolate chips. I chose the Caffé which was made from Guatemalan Genuina Antigua coffee and I loved it! It tasted like a strong espresso and was perfect after a meal.

Rochelle chose two fruit sorbets which were a bit too tart for our tastes. This was the last time she ordered sorbet and this was the last time we all shared gelato. After this first gelato we all became greedy little gelato monsters claiming it was our balm to the hot, hot Italian weather.

While the food in Italy wasn’t as good as the meals we had in Spain all the wonderful gelato we had more than made up for it. Watch out for many more gelato posts.

Gelato – Tips for Spotting the Real Thing
(from Traveldudes)

It’s not difficult to find a gelato in Rome.

There are gelaterias on nearly every corner of the city, each one ready to fill hungry mouths with their deliciously creamy treat.

The hard part is knowing if you have found genuine, handcrafted, naturally-flavored gelato.

Since nearly 80% of gelato in Rome is fake, that task can seem daunting. But armed with this knowledge, spotting the real thing is no problem.

1. Evaluate the color:
Natural ingredients are not neon colored. Neither is real gelato. Look for soft, muted colors, especially in the Pistachio, Mint, and Banana flavors. Pistachio should be an earthy green, Mint should be white, and Banana should be whitish-grey. And do not be fooled by the fruit they put on top. It may look pretty, but it doesn’t mean any actual fruit was used in the making.

2. Look at the shape:
If the gelato is arranged in huge mounds above the top of the metal tubs, then it is fake. The reason it can hold this shape is that it has a much higher percentage of air, made possible using chemical stabilizers. So if you want a richer, more flavorful experience, and don’t want to pay for air (which you can get anywhere else for free) then go for something less globular.
bad gelato
avoid gelato that looks like this

3. Observe the Ingredients List:
Roman food shops are required by law to display their ingredients list, so it is a red flag if you can’t find one or have to search for it. When you do locate the list, count how many of the items are coded with an E followed by a number. E140 and E141 are natural additives, but most others are artificial creations.

4. Last and most obvious:
If you see stacks of cement-like bags behind the counter labeled with the names of different flavors like fragola, menta, and mandorla, than you are in the middle of a crime scene- the crime is known simply as “gelato fraud.”

Bonus:
Want to look really smart in front of your friends and family? Wow them with your knowledge of what makes gelato different from ice cream.

1. Gelato is made with mostly milk, whereas ice cream is made with mostly cream. Therefore, ice cream has 2-3 times the fat content.

2. Gelato is made using a slow churning process, whereas ice cream is whipped. This means gelato has a lower air content making it denser and richer.

3. Gelato is served at a warmer temperature than ice cream, and freezes at a lower temperature, so it is soft from the first spoonful.

Florence: La Repubblica Ristorante

Our first meal in Florence wasn’t very good. There were a lot of restaurants around Piazza Duomo and we tried our best to find a decent place to have dinner and ended up at La Repubblica.

Our first clue should have been the big group of tourists outside the restaurant. I should have realized they catered to big tourist groups who were usually in a hurry and had a limited budget.

Florence: Il Duomo, Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore

Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore or The Duomo

I didn’t do much research on Florence so imagine my surprise when we reached the Piazza del Duomo and saw this amazingly beautiful cathedral made with pink and green marble. I’ve never seen any church like that.

Florence’s cathedral stands tall over the city with its magnificent Renaissance dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. The cathedral named in honor of Santa Maria del Fiore is a vast Gothic structure built on the site of the 7th century church of Santa Reparata, the remains of which can be seen in the crypt.

The cathedral was begun at the end of the 13th century by Arnolfo di Cambio, and the dome, which dominates the exterior, was added in the 15th century on a design of Filippo Brunelleschi. A statue to each of these important architects can be found outside to the right of the cathedral, both admiring their work for the rest of eternity. Can you imagine it took two centuries for the cathedral to be deemed finished? source

Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore or The Duomo-021

Its origins are unknown although it is believed that it was built over the ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to Mars dating back to the 4th-5th century A.D. It was first described in 897 as a minor basilica. In 1128 it was consacrated as the Baptistery of Florence and as such is the oldest religious monument in Florence. Up until the end of the 19th century, all catholics in Florence were baptized within its doors.

The Baptistery, dedicated to Florence’s patron saint, has an octagonal plan and an octagonal lantern with a cupola. Outside it is clad in geometrically patterned colored marble, white Carrara marble and green Prato marble that is typical of Florentine Romanesque architecture. source

The Gates of Paradise received their name by Michelangelo who is believed to have exclaimed: “they are so beautiful that they would be perfect for the gates of paradise”.

The doors consist of 10 rectangular panels, displayed in two lines. They depict scenes of the Old Testament from left to right and from top to bottom. In each panel, Ghiberti described more than one scene so that there are over fifty scenes depicted. All around the frame of the doors Ghiberti added 24 small bronze busts of famous Florentines, including his own self-portratit.

The original panels of the Gates of Paradise are now displayed at the Opera del Duomo Museum, the ones in situ are copies. source

Florence: Le Stanze dei Medici Bed & Breakfast

Le Stanze dei Medici B&B
In Florence we stayed at  Le Stanze dei Medici  a bed and breakfast (B&B) located in Via Cavour a street lined with many stores and restaurants. It’s also a short five minute walk to Piazza del Duomo where all the major tourist attractions are located. This place was highly recommended by my cousin-in-law Mary who stayed there before.

We had a misunderstanding with the manager of the B&B about our time of arrival so when we arrived there was no one to open the door for us. We rang the bell for more than five minutes with no results. We finally called them up and the manager came to let us in.
Le Stanze dei Medici B&B-001

There was a small elevator that barely fit 3 people.
Le Stanze dei Medici B&B-002

Le Stanze dei Medici B&B-003

The small lobby had the manager’s table plus a refrigerator filled with water and soda. We thought the contents were free but were told to leave the payment on the table for the things we got. It’s much cheaper to buy drinks from the store next door. The tap water in Florence was potable so I drank that. The manager was kind enough to let us store some food in the refrigerator.

There were also two rooms located here.
Le Stanze dei Medici B&B-004

Our rooms were located along this brightly lit hallway. The lights were on sensor. The room at the end of the hallway was the breakfast room.
Le Stanze dei Medici B&B-005

Rochelle and I got room 2. We were given a set of 3 keys. One for the main door of the building, one for the B&B’s door and last for our room. I wish they could have given us two sets of keys for the times we wanted to go our own way.
Le Stanze dei Medici B&B-007

Our room was pretty basic but clean and the bed was quite comfy. I liked the bedpost perfect for resting my legs on after a full day of walking.

Our most valuable resource was this clothesline I bought at the HK$10 store in Hong Kong. It’s probably available in Saizen in Manila since they carry the same things.

Lunch at Annapolis Seafood Palace

Annapolis Seafood Palace- roasted duck P1,800-whole
There are many good Chinese restaurants in Manila. My dad’s ultimate favorite is Choi Garden and my uncle E’s choice is Peking Garden and Choi too. For my aunt her favorite is Annapolis Seafood Palace in Greenhills.

We had lunch last September for my uncle’s 6th death anniversary with some friends and family.

The biggest surprise for me was the roasted duck. It was freakin’ unbelievably fantastic. The meat was very juicy and flavorful. There was barely any fat under the crispy skin. My only gripe was they served it with hoisin sauce instead of plum sauce but this didn’t need any sauce anyway. I must have eaten 4 pieces and I wanted more.

Since then I’ve eaten this duck twice already. That’s how much I love it. There’s no need to fly to Hong Kong to have good roasted duck anymore. If you love duck I suggest you RUN to Annapolis Seafood ASAP and try this duck.

Hamachi jaw is usually found grilled in Japanese restaurants. This was my first time to try it steamed and it was a revelation. The meat was firm yet buttery and delicate. The caramelized onions on top added a depth of flavor to it. This is another MUST order.

Barcelona: El Prat Airport and Spain Highlights

Barcelona-El Prat Airport
Goodbye Barcelona! Goodbye Spain! It was a quick 8 day trip that started in Madrid and a quick stop to Bilbao on our way to beautiful seaside San Sebastian and ended with the best in Barcelona.

Barcelona’s airport was nice and modern but the real reason for this post is my most important tip to those planning to travel to Spain.  Try to plan your travels on a Sunday. My cousin La and her family remained in Barcelona an extra day while we were in the airport the same Sunday. She told us almost all the stores and restaurants in the city were closed. We were so happy to be in the airport where all the stores were open and we were able to do last minute shopping specially in our favorite store, Natura.

Spain has many famous brands like Mango, Zara and Massimo Dutti which have branches in Manila. We discovered Natura which our tour guide Marta said was her favorite local brand. The clothes in Natura are made of the finest and lightest woven cotton which we all loved. We tried to visit as many branches as we could since each store sold different merchandise.

Eight days definitely wasn’t enough for Spain but it gave me a quick overview of the most popular attractions. I’ve already started a list of places and restaurants I want to go to specially in San Sebastian and Barcelona on my next trip. Hopefully I can see more cities around Spain. I loved the food, the culture and the friendly people. I shall return!!!

Barcelona: Tapas 24 & Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

Tapas 24 - XORICOS OEUS DE PATATA (French Fries with chorizo & fried egg) €12
My dreams of dining at El Buli will never be realized now that the famous restaurant of Ferran Adrià  has closed it’s doors. I tried desperately to get reservations at Tickets, the tapas bar in Barcelona Adrià opened with his brother. Reservations for a group of 16 was impossible so I tried it for 4 and even just for myself but it was fully booked months in advance.

Left with no hope of eating Adrià’s creations I did the next best thing. I ate at Tapas 24 owned by Carles Abellan who worked at El Buli for seven years and worked with Adrià at two other  restaurants. Abellan later opened his own restaurant, Comerç 24 and later on the more casual Tapas 24.

Tapas 24 or TapaÇ24 was located just a couple of blocks from Casa Batlló and around the corner from Passeig de Gracia and I walked to meet my cousin Sharon who was already there.

The 125 square meter restaurant was in the basement of a building.

The tiny space was maximized well. Every available space was used for small tables or a communal table like the one we occupied.

The menu was in Catalán but we managed to make out some of the words and I also had an idea on what to order based on reviews I read online.

The menu was printed on an envelope that held the fork, knife and napkin.

The menu of the day was also right beside us not that we understood it. We would have ordered more food if there was an English menu.

Of all the sangrias we had in Spain this was my favorite. Citrusy yet potent.

Our very last anchovies!

This may look like regular croquetas but it was the best I’ve eaten. The flavors of the Iberian ham were  evident in the pillows of thick, velvety bechamel sauce. I wanted to order more but Sha convinced me there were more goodies to come and she was right.
Tapas 24 - CROQUETES DE PERNIL IBÈRIC (Iberian Ham Croquetas) €2 each

One of their most famous dishes is the Mc Foie Burger, a burger patty in a thin and crisp bun with a side of foie gras dip which I slathered on my burger. It was pretty good but the foie dip wasn’t as flavorful as I expected.

Shrimp from Huelva are very famous in Spain for their sweet and delicate flavor. These were served simply with salt.
Tapas 24 - GAMBA DE HUELVA €9

We asked our server for his recommendation and he pointed at Bikini Comerc 24 and even though we didn’t have any idea what it was we heeded to his suggestion. When it arrived I saw a simple ham and cheese sandwich.
Tapas 24 - BIKINI COMERÇ 24 (Ham & Cheese sandwich) €9.50
BIKINI COMERÇ 24 (Ham & Cheese sandwich) €9.50

With one bite and a loud groan I sank my teeth into ecstasy.  Salty jamón ibérico paired with a mild cheese with flecks of black truffle in between buttered bread. It was pure delight and something I wish I could eat every single day of my life. It was definitely my favorite dish that night.
Tapas 24 - BIKINI COMERÇ 24 (Ham & Cheese sandwich) €9.50 - 001

I’ve been looking for this dish everywhere and finally I found it here. Simple french fries topped with good chorizo and a fried egg.
Tapas 24 - XORICOS OEUS DE PATATA (French Fries with chorizo & fried egg) €12

The best way to eat it was to get a little of everything in your fork and relish the flavors and textures in your mouth.

I was so glad my last meal in Spain was also one of the best. I want to try Comerç 24 the next time I go back to Barcelona. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone going to Barcelona. It’s a MUST!!!

After dinner we went to the famous Magic Fountain  of Montjuïc for some free entertainment.

At first I wasn’t that impressed since I’ve seen the spectacular fountains of The Bellagio in Las Vegas.

We stayed for almost an hour and was treated to different sets of music from classical to the 80s which we really enjoyed. True it wasn’t as grand as The Bellagio’s fountains but it was fun to watch too.
