Dinner at Fiesta sa Barrio

Fiesta sa Barrio - chicken skin chicharon 5.95
This is it, my last meal in the USA. After spending a month going from San Francisco to Virginia, Washington DC and New York my last meal in Los Angeles was supposed to end with my best meal right? I was dreaming of Lawry’s Prime Rib or some famous TV chef’s restaurant. Where did I end up eating? In a Filipino restaurant!!!

Fiesta sa Barrio-002

Fiesta sa Barrio-004

This was our long table half filled with kids of all ages. The other half was filled with adults of all ages too. 😀
Fiesta sa Barrio-003

It was my cousin’s bff, Andrew’s birthday and his only request was to eat in a Filipino restaurant.
Fiesta sa Barrio-005

I really didn’t mind eating in a Filipino restaurant since I got to meet new friends who were super nice and funny.
Fiesta sa Barrio-006

I’ve eaten in a Filipino restaurant in New Jersey years ago and it wasn’t very good. I heard this restaurant was run by a guy who used to be the chef in Barrio Fiesta in L.A. thus the play on the restaurant’s name.

I almost fainted when the chicken skin chicharon came out. It’s my biggest weakness. I can skip any other kind of chicharon but never chicken skin. These babies were soooooo good and it tasted almost like Jollibee’s Chicken Joy.

To Americans and other nationalities reading my blog. Please do try chicken skin chicharon in your nearest Filipino restaurant. I just hope they can cook it as crisp as these. They didn’t even taste oily.
Fiesta sa Barrio - chicken skin chicharon 5.95

The calamari was so good and it had an intense flavor like dried squid but it very crisp. I’ve never eaten fried squid that tasted like this.
Fiesta sa Barrio- calamari $7.95

The sisig was just ok for me. It wasn’t crispy like the way they do it in Manila.
Fiesta sa Barrio- sisig $8.95

Although the picture doesn’t show evidence of any shrimp this was gambas and it was spicy-licious!!

For Americans it’s chicken soup for the soul. For Filipinos it’s bulalo soup. Clear broth simmered for hours with beef and bone marrow is what hits our soul. True Filipino comfort food.
Fiesta sa Barrio- nilagang baka $10.95
nilagang bulalo $10.95

The last time I’ve eaten in Barrio Fiesta in Manila was decades ago and the dish I remember most is their bouillabaisse so I requested Sidney to order it. This bouillabaisse taste just like the way I remember. It was nothing like the ones I had here and here which were the more traditional style.
Fiesta sa Barrio- bouillabaisse $13.50

I’ve never seen bouillabaisse with a white, creamy soup base anywhere else but this was good and it brought back childhood memories.

The sauce of the Kare Kare was not peanutty at all instead it was very beefy. It did have big and meaty pieces of ox tail. The bagoong was extremely salty.

I found the crispy pata too oily but the flavor was good enough.
Fiesta sa Barrio- crispy pata $13.95

I loved the kenchi steak with gravy that tasted like it’s main ingredient was Knorr liquid seasoning. Kenchi is a part of the beef shank and that’s how they call it in the markets in Manila. It sounds like a Chinese name that has become part of the vernacular.
Fiesta sa Barrio- kenchi steak $11.95

I was impressed that they also had boneless bangus or milkfish which is a popular fish in Manila.
Fiesta sa Barrio- daing na bangus $11.95

I didn’t eat any pinakbet since I got scared of the very red color of the dish.

The tomato still had a sticker on it. 😀

The ube ice cream was even more purple than my shirt!
Fiesta sa Barrio-001

That night I found out my nephew Ryan was a budding masseuse of cured tita Karen of the knot on her shoulders.

In spite of some hits and misses I really enjoyed dinner in the company of such gregarious people. It turned out to be a great last dinner after all.

Brunch at Campanile

Scandia Beef Brisket Hash $17-001
Who hasn’t heard of Campanile? I’ve wanted to eat there for years and finally got the chance on my last day in Los Angeles last December 2011.

Campanile

Campanile-003

Campanile-004

Campanile is housed in an historic and dramatic structure built in 1929 by architect Roy Sheldon Price for Hollywood legend Charlie Chaplin. Mr Chaplin originally intended to use the building as a mixed use site, retail downstairs, offices upstairs. Chaplin was never able to take occupancy as he lost the building in his divorce to his “child bride” second wife, Lita Grey. We pay tribute to the Chaplins as our two private dining rooms bear their names. In the late 1980s, following decades of neglect, the building was purchased by Executive Chef Mark Peel, former Pastry Chef Nancy Silverton and former Wine Director Manfred Krankl. Architect Josh Schweitzer supervised a complete remodel, converting the structure into a magical space intended for a bakery and restaurant. La Brea Bakery opened in January of 1989, with Campanile following six months later.

The basket of pastries from La Brea Bakery was excellent. It’s a good thing there were 6 of us sharing it or I would have eaten most of them all by myself.

Sid had a simple open faced sandwich made with country wheat toast, arugula, parsley pesto, prosciutto and two poached eggs. He liked it very much.

Eggs & Prosciutto $16
Eggs & Prosciutto $16

Ryan had a slice of olive bread with an egg in the middle and some potatoes. I don’t understand how this cost $15 only a dollar less than the dish above and below. Anyway the important thing was Ryan loved it and finished it.
Egg in a Hole $15
Egg in a Hole $15

What looked like a simple pasta dish with beef bolognese, kale and shaved parmesan was actually the best dish on our table in my opinion. What made this so good was the trenne pasta which was seared to a crisp. That was really unusual and was really good with the meat and vegetables.
Sautéed Trenne $16
Sautéed Trenne $16

The beef bolognese was no ordinary ground beef in tomato sauce. The beef was braised for a long time and was so tender.
Sautéed Trenne $16-001

The beef brisket hash was the healthiest thing I could find on the menu other than the egg white omelette which I’d rather not eat.
Scandia Beef Brisket Hash $17
Scandia Beef Brisket Hash $17

The beef was just ok for me. It was tender and flavorful but nothing really special. I enjoyed the poached egg on sourdough toast a lot though. I wish I ordered the crab cakes benedict instead.
Scandia Beef Brisket Hash $17-002

We were done with brunch when I remembered to check-in to Foursquare and was surprised to get a complimentary chef offering. I showed my iPhone to the waiter and he returned with a small dish with the softest, creamiest mozzarella topped with fresh pesto and cherry tomatoes. The best part was he gave all of us in the table a plate each. It was delicious and free thanks to Foursquare. That’s why I always check-in to Foursquare. You’ll never know if there’s a surprise that awaits you.

This was the only picture I was able to take before someone told me picture taking in the bakery wasn’t allowed. That was the first time I was forbidden to take pictures in ANY food establishment in the USA.

I bought a rosemary corn scone and another scone which I forgot. I can’t believe I didn’t take any picture of my take-out goodies which I planned to snack on the plane back to Manila. Yes this was my last day in L.A. I do remember well how good the rosemary scone was. It had cornmeal and corn pieces in the scone. The texture was a cross between a scone and cornbread. The combination of my two most favorite breads in one delightful sweet and grainy scone with strong rosemary flavors was just heaven for me. It was very crumbly and I was glad it was in a ziplock.

Sid and Mary please bring me some rosemary scones next time you come to Manila!!

Donut Love with J.CO Donuts

J.CO Donuts
I was going to start my diet again yesterday and not cheat anymore. I needed to lose the weight I’ve gained from my trip to the USA and Hong Kong Disneyland and many other mini vacations. I was quite a good girl the whole day until I went home and saw donuts.

Sharing the J.CO way

The good folks over at J.CO Donuts Philippines sent me 2 dozen donuts. I almost fainted with joy and a sense of doom for my diet.

Obviously someone got to the first box of donuts before I got home since 2 pieces were missing. I applaud the effort to move the donuts around to make it less obvious. You know who you are!
J.CO Donuts-001

The second box contained their bestseller, the Alcapone which is soft bite donut dunked in Belgian white chocolate and topped with sliced Californian almonds.
J.CO Donuts- alcapone donuts

They must know me well since there was a predominant brown color in one box.

I’m not a big fan of donuts. The last time I ate a donut was when KK opened in Manila and I went to their store in The Fort to see what the fuss was about. I was handed a free, newly cooked glazed donut. I took a bite and immediately tried to scrape all the sugar glaze. I found it too sweet and oily.

That was my last foray into donuts until yesterday. My first bite into the Alcapone donut quickly led into the second, third and fourth bite until I remembered to take a picture. I loved the soft donut without any oily aftertaste. The Belgian chocolate had the right amount of sweetness. The best part was the generous slices of crunchy almonds. I understand why this is the bestseller. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a donut with this much almonds. I can only imagine if they had a version made with dark Belgian chocolate instead. That would be even more heavenly.
J.CO Donuts- alcapone donut

For this post I had to try more donuts right? I was quite excited to try the green tease donut since I have an obsession with anything matcha (green tea powder) flavored, from cookies, candies and tea drinks. I was surprised at how potent the matcha flavor was. This was not just coloring. It was real matcha baby. The only thing that didn’t thrill me was the plain cream filling. I wish it was matcha flavored too. I had two bites of this donut’s topping.
J.CO Donuts- green tease donut

I had to try one chocolate donut too right?
J.CO Donuts- chocolate selections

I picked up the most chocolatey looking donut and was surprised to find the whole donut covered in chocolate. It wasn’t chocolate glaze but real chocolate. It it were low quality chocolate I would have spit it out but thankfully good quality semisweet chocolate was used. I had to physically push it away before I consumed another whole donut.
J.CO Donuts- black jack donut

I was curious what this donut tasted like so I took another bite. Oh wow it had peanut butter flavored cream inside. The topping tasted like mocha. The combination was another winner.  Uggghh I was so full after eating all these donuts. If I skip dinner will I save the calories of all the donuts I ate?

Thankfully donuts don’t have as much calories as cupcakes, muffins or bagels since they’re light and airy and not dense like the others.

The next 3 pictures came from their Facebook page.

I want to try the cheese me up and mr. green tea too.

I will definitely visit their branch soon to try their coffees specially the espresso, hot mochabella  and the iced green tea.

Dinner at Fig & Olive

Fig & Olive- crostini-001
Whenever I travel I make it a point to research on which restaurants to try. However I don’t bother doing this whenever I go to Los Angeles because I implicitly trust the taste of my cousin-in-law, Mary who’s a foodie too. She knows all the best places to eat at in L.A.

I’ve never heard of Fig & Olive before. Mary told me that’s it’s very popular in New York and the branch at Melrose Place was the first one outside NYC.
Fig & Olive

The cuisine is based on the food from the French Riviera and coastal regions of the Mediterranean by Executive Chef Pascal Lorange.

I love the gorgeous interiors.

Fig & Olive-005

I really liked the open set-up of the mixed use restroom. The male and female cubicles were behind individual doors opposite this long sink counter.
Fig & Olive- open restroom

I wish the restaurant had a tad better lighting. It was so difficult to get good shots since it was so dark. I’m not too happy with the pictures. I was ecstatic about the food though.

I don’t remember what the olive oils were called but I remember our waiter describing them as grassy, banana and fruity. I tried each olive oil and to my amazement one really tasted grassy which was a bit strange to my palate. The banana flavored olive oil wasn’t my favorite either. I liked the fruity olive oil the best.

Sid and Mary brought their own wine.

We shared a plate of assorted crostinis.
Fig & Olive- crostini
3 kinds of crostini – 6 pcs for $19

All the crostinis were excellent but my favorite was the manchego, fig and macrona almond since separately those 3 ingredients are among my most loved food and together they were just perfect. Sweet, salty and crunchy.

Again the flavors on this appetizer were just exquisite. All the ingredients complemented each other and the warm flaky puff pastry was just the perfect vessel.
Fig & Olive- fig gorgonzola tartlet $15-001

For my main course I chose the Fig & Olive salad. It had nothing to do with my diet but I wasn’t very hungry and wanted something lighter although I was very tempted with the Côte D’ Azur bouillabaisse.

Romaine hearts, mesclun, fig, apple, manchego, dolce gorgonzola, tomato, walnut olive, scallion, 18 year old fig balsamic – Arbequina Olive Oil

OMG this was the best salad I’ve ever eaten in my life!!! You know many restaurants say they use only the best ingredients, this is the first time I tasted and appreciated what the best really meant.

The flavor of the olive oil was so bright and really brought out the flavor of each ingredient. Even the olives which I don’t normally like was delicious. The presence of 18 year old fig balsamic vinegar added just the slightest tang to my perfect salad. It was so dark I couldn’t really see what I was eating. Imagine my delight when I would bite into salty gorgonzola cheese with some sweet figs and tomatoes. The next forkful would bring a chunk of manchego cheese, olives and apples.  This was so worth each and every dollar. Maybe more.
Fig & Olive- Fig & Olive salad $16-001

My nephews may be young but they are budding gourmands. They had the penne with mushroom and while truffle oil. Even without any traditional ‘sauce’ the pasta was rich, creamy and earthy.

olive oil gelato, candied orange olive oil & toasted almonds

The olive oil gelato was certainly unique. It was a bit salty so it was a good contrast to the sweet cake. The pastry chef knew the importance of textures and it came in the form of candied orange olive oil and toasted almonds. This is my kind of dessert – creamy, chewy, soft, cold, crunchy.
Fig & Olive- marzipan cake $9-001

Homemade fancy ‘Kit  Kat’ was served with the pot de creme. Was it for dipping? I’ll never know since it was gone even before we ate the main dessert.

The deep, dark, rich chocolate love was underneath the vanilla cream. I just loved the hint of orange in the chocolate.

Food Options at Century City Mall

I should have told Sidney earlier that I wanted to go to Universal Studios. Since we weren’t able to plan it he brought me to Century City Mall instead.

I’ve never been to this outdoor mall. It was pretty nice but I was all shopped out so we just walked around a bit.

I was fascinated with the food court though. It didn’t look like any mall food court I’ve ever seen before. The natural light from above made it feel like you were eating outdoors with the benefit of air-conditioning.

Sid and I shared an appetizer of roasted quail stuffed with wild mushrooms, crispy potato nest, garnet yam puree, wilted arugula and medjool dates. On it’s own the quail didn’t have much flavor but when eaten with the stuffing, sauce and dates it tasted better.

Since I was missing the bouillabaisse at Whole Foods I decided to order it for lunch. This version was totally different. Instead of a tomato broth this bouillabaisse was made with mussels, clams, shrimp, chorizo, coriander, chipotle saffron cream, fried onion and oranges.

Dinner at Sushi One

Sushi One (Valencia, Ca)- dynamite $7.95.50
Our driver, aka cousin Sidney, was too tired to drive after the horrible traffic we passed through earlier. He decided we were going to eat nearby at Sushi One.

I immediately told him I don’t really eat raw fish and rice but he said, “don’t worry!” With that cryptic advice I just shuddered and wondered what food awaited me.

The rest of our dinner group was already there waiting for us – my cousin Kenneth (La and Sid’s eldest brother) and his lovely wife Dianne with Sid’s kids, Kenjie and Ryan.

Warning this picture is the only truly Japanese food in this entry. Everything after will not be recognized by a Japanese national. Welcome to California. Moshi moshi, domo arigato.

These mussels were huge and simply to-die-for!!! Sesame mayonnaise topped the mussels and broiled until hot. You know what they say – mayonnaise makes everything good. In this case it’s true! It was creamy and a bit sweet just the way Filipinos like it.
Sushi One (Valencia, Ca)- baked green mussels $5.50

If I only knew how much food was still coming I wouldn’t even have tried these two fried dishes although the chicken was not bad at all. The kids loved this.

The calamari was plain awful. These unknown objects were hard and definitely came out of a bag from the freezer.

Spicy tuna is one kind of raw fish I eat. Unlike other versions I’ve tried which were drowning in mayonnaise this wasn’t. The tuna was finely chopped and the heat was just perfect. I loved it together with the salad made up of cucumber, fresh daikon and spring mix lettuce.
Sushi One (Valencia, Ca)- spicy tuna salad $8.95

Here’s where the fun begins. All the following dishes were created by some genius mastermind for the American market to enjoy sushi. None of these dishes resemble real sushi found in Japan or authentic Japanese restaurants. If a Japanese sushi chef should see these he will probably faint.

Sad to say I loved it all. Shame on me I know and I apologize to all the gourmands out there but when it comes to sushi I’m 100% jologs. Sid was quite amused at the way I gushed and moaned with each bite.

Why don’t we have dynamite in Manila? Dynamite is made up of baked scallop, shrimp, crab, mushroom, soy bean with masago & eel sauce. That’s what the menu said. None of the seafood was probably fresh but the total dish was creamy, super umami, and just plain delicious. I loved the burnt bits too. I’m sure this would be a big hit in Manila.

Oh how I love dynamite. I can just imagine eating this with sushi rice on the side. Lettuce would be good too.

Can you guess what this is?
Sushi One (Valencia, Ca)- blooming onion roll $10.95

Yup that was fried onion strips. Only an evil genius could come up with something as American as fried onion strips and adding it to a sushi roll filled with spicy tuna and topped with albacore tuna and avocado. He knew the contrast in textures and flavors would be a big hit.

The next two creations are another American invention or accident. Maybe one day a chef dropped sushi in a vat of hot oil and discovered it was yummy. The tempura roll was born. Americans fry everything, from Twinkies, butter, ice cream, chocolate bars. Why not sushi?

This roll actually didn’t have rice in it. The filling was made of salmon and albacore and deep fried. The sauce was spicy mayo. I just tried a piece since I was already so full. It was just ok.
Sushi One (Valencia, Ca)- red & while roll $8.95

Take your usual California roll, dip it in tempura batter and deep fry the baby. It was actually good but the rice was too mushy. I was lucky enough to get a piece because my young nephew, Ryan, literally inhaled it all and all the rolls disappeared in a flash.

Yipee more fried food. Breaded scallops fried side by side with sushi rolls filled with crabmeat and avocado.

Looks more authentic? Yeah… sushi roll stuffed with crabmeat and topped with baked eel and avocado.

Sushi One (Valencia, Ca)-018

Yup another successful wipeout! Despite all the Franken-sushi I really enjoyed our dinner. I happily told Sidney I don’t mind going to Sushi One again on my next trip. He was happy to hear that. But I can’t wait for Mary’s plan on our next meal. That excited me more.

Sweet Lady Jane

Sweet Lady Jane - 7 layer mocha cake
After a healthy lunch at Lemonade we deserved the best unhealthy cakes and sweets Los Angeles can offer and that’s at Sweet Lady Jane.

If Sweet Lady Jane sounds familiar to you it’s because they made the wedding cake of Ellen Degeneres and Portia De Rossi.

I was really full from lunch so I couldn’t choose which cake to try.

Sidney chose this 7 layer mocha cake. It was just ok for me. There was more buttercream than cake and there wasn’t much mocha flavor. I did love the thick chocolate glaze outside the cake. We also shared a large French press coffee. That was good!

I couldn’t resist buying a date oatmeal bar and chocolate pillow cookie to take home. I couldn’t resist anything with dates or figs.

When I was in Virginia the cookies I bought remained soft and chewy until the next day. These cookies were rock hard the next day. It must be the weather. Despite being hard I still enjoyed the super dark and rich chocolate cookie studded with lots of chocolate chips.

We loved the apple tarte tatin with it’s thin, flaky crust. The apples were crunchy and the flavor was excellent.

On the way back home we encountered really bad traffic. It was due to this truck that overturned. Our normal 45 minute trip took more than 2 hours. It felt just like I was back in Manila. Only much worse.

Healthy Lunch at Lemonade

Lemonade L.A.-Fall succotash, butternut squash, white corn, grapes, oregano
My cousin-in-law Mary knows all the best places to eat at in Los Angeles. She also knew I was on a diet and was interested in healthier options. In spite of my cousin Sidney’s objection we went to Lemonade in Brentwood.

I’ve never been to Brentwood before and it looked like a very charming place to shop and eat. Too bad we didn’t have time to walk around after lunch.
Lemonade L.A.

On their website Lemonade was described as “a modern cafeteria serving seasonal Southern California comfort food.”

In other places comfort food meant fried chicken, mac n’ cheese, ribs, burgers and fries. In Southern California comfort food meant lots of veggies, exotic ingredients and unusual flavor combinations. I like it!!! Check out all the salad choices.

The spread reminded me of the healthy selections at Whole Foods Market but these were even more colorful and varied.
Lemonade L.A.-healthy salads.-011
kale, mushrooms, kumquat vinaigrette
red quinoa, brussels sprouts, sundried tomato dressing
blue lake green beans, caesar

Lemonade L.A.-healthy salads.-004
fruit of the day, arugula, blue cheese, balsamic
Israeli couscous, wild mushrooms, parmesan, lemon truffle
soba noodle, kimchi marinated vegetables
fall succotash, butternut squash, white corn, grapes, oregano

Lemonade L.A.-healthy salads.-006
avocado, cherry tomato, pine nuts, lime
spaghetti squash, farro, pomegranate vinaigrette
fingerling potatoes, saffron, créme fraiche

This set-up reminded me of a buffet wherein you have so many choices but since you have to pay for each thing you choose there is less chance of over eating.

I was overwhelmed and didn’t know what to choose so I let Mary decide since I trust her taste implicitly. Lemonade was one of her favorite places for good, healthy food.

If salads aren’t your thing there were also many hearty sandwiches to choose from.

Pots of meat they called Braises looked just like something your mom would have simmering on the cooktop. It looked so delectable that we succombed and got two meat dishes. We had to make Sidney happy with some meat.

Everything was good but I liked the squash combo the best. It had a vinaigrette dressing instead of mayonnaise which I appreciated.

Mary got a bigger portion of the soba salad since she knew we would love it. She was right. It was our favorite of all the salads. It had a vinegar based dressing so it was tangy, spicy and so flavorful.

Of the two beef dishes I liked the red miso short ribs more. It was super tender and the sauce was very rich and the miso added a different flavor which went quite well with the beef. Their small portions were quite generous. There were 3 of us and we couldn’t finish all the food which cost a very reasonable $33.

Sidney had to have rice with the short ribs. Adding the basmati rice pilaf cost only $1.

For dessert I couldn’t resist getting two cookies. The lemon shortbread unfortunately lacked lemon flavor. The texture was quite good and the buttery flavor was evident.

I liked the chewy white chocolate raspberry cookie but I wish it was bittersweet chocolate instead of white chocolate.

I wish we had something like this in Manila. We really need a casual restaurant serving good and healthy salads that aren’t drowning in carbs and mayonnaise. With food like this it wouldn’t be hard to eat vegetarian. Thanks for bringing me here Mary. I loved it!!!
