World Soybean Milk Magnate

you tiao or Chinese cruller
We told my cousin, Angie who’s been living in Taipei for more than 10 years now, that we wanted to eat authentic Taiwanese food specially soy milk and you tiao or Chinese fried crullers. Angie brought us to World Soybean Milk Magnate. With a name like that our expectations were high.

World Soybean Milk Magnate

While writing this entry I learned from this Filipino website that this restaurant was featured as a tourist attraction in Taipei’s subway network. It must get it’s fair share of tourists since it’s just by the Dingxi metro station. Here’s a short history of the restaurant from here.
World Soybean Milk Magnate, the first such shop in Taipei County’s Yungho City, was opened by Li Yun-tseng after he first came to Yungho in 1955. In those days, he recounts, the city did not have a large population. Trade came in fits and starts, and he was on the verge of closing down. But then around 1961 the project to widen Chungcheng Bridge and Yungho Road brought large numbers of construction workers into the city, and they became his clientele. From then on business picked up, and other operators were attracted to start up in competition. By 1971, along only a 100-meter stretch of Yungho Road under Chungcheng Bridge, over ten shaobing and soybean milk shops were concentrated, and these became a well known Yungho landmark.

“With more and more customers coming in all day, Father had to stay open longer and longer, and in 1975 he started opening 24 hours.” Second-generation owner Li Ching-yu, who now runs the business, says that at that time growing prosperity was bringing an increase in night-time leisure activities. After, say, an evening’s mahjong, people would come out looking for a midnight snack. Thus in addition to shaobing and youtiao, Li senior also started selling snacks such as xiekehuang (a type of small, refined shaobing with flaky pastry and a sweet or savory filling), deep-fried shredded radish cakes, and Malay steamed sponge cake.

There were all sorts of Chinese pastries being cooked right at the entrance of the restaurant. We were quite excited and wanted to try everything.

You had the option of hot or cold soy milk. Either way I didn’t like it at all. Maybe it wasn’t what we were used to. It was a good thing we just had a little of each since our next meal was going to be at the original branch of Din Tai Fung.

Pineapple Cake from Chiate Bakery

One of the things on my shopping list  for Taipei was pineapple cakes from Chiate Bakery.

I tried my first pineapple cake when I was a child visiting Taipei. I never liked the thick dry crust and overly sweet filling. But when a friend of my dad’s gave him a box of pineapple cake from Chiate Bakery my dad  forced me to try it. With one bite I was in love. The crust was buttery, crumbly and just thin enough to hold it’s shape. The pineapple filling had the right amount of sweetness and the texture was soft but not mushy.

My cousin Angie with her son Daniel and friend Robert were our tour guides for the day. I insisted the first stop be Chiate Bakery. Despite having lived in Taipei for several years Angie never heard of Chiate Bakery. It was a good thing Robert knew where it was.
Chiate bakery-5

When we entered the store our noses were assaulted with the wonderful smell of buttery baked goods. We couldn’t stop sniffing in the store. All the products were laid out around the store and you get what you want and pay at the counter.
Chiate bakery

On this long table were all the flavors of pastries. Aside from pineapple there was also pineapple egg yolk, cranberry, longan, plum, whole wheat cherry pineapple and walnut flavors. You can buy per piece or pack an assortment in one of the empty boxes on top. Boxes were available for 6, 12 or 20 pieces. We tried different flavors before deciding to buy the pineapple, cranberry and walnut flavors. Overall the pineapple cakes were still the best.
Chiate bakery-1

There was a steady stream of buyers that kept the cashiers busy. Chiate is definitely one of the best if not the best source of pineapple cake in Taiwan. Be sure to buy a box or 5 next time you’re in Taipei and give 1 to me!

Dinner at Shin Yeh restaurant in Taipei

Rochelle’s mom had very good memories of this restaurant which she used to frequent many, many years ago. Thanks to Google we were able to track down a branch of Shin Yeh restaurant at the 8th flr. of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi at Nanjing Rd.

The food was very well cooked and the flavors were delicious. My only gripe was the servings were so, so small. I loved this fried, crunchy fish with peanuts best. It was good to eat alone as an appetizer or with rice or congee.

Shopping Malls in Taipei

shopping in Taipei
After lunch at Wasabi in Taipei 101 we walked around the area filled with shopping malls. From Taipei 101 we crossed a walkway that connected to New York New York mall which housed Muji and

Daiso, our favorite Japanese stores. This is just one of the many malls in the Xinyi district which is a very beautiful upscale shopping area in the heart of Taipei..

We did a little shopping at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi an upscale Japanese department store chain. It was quite confusing since the store was split into 4 buildings called A4, A8, A9 and A11 which housed the ladies, mens, houseware in separate buildings. Beautiful but confusing.

Lunch at Wasabi at Taipei 101

Wasabi restaurant-18

While walking around Taipei 101 the day before we noticed the long lines in front of Wasabi. We took a look at the food and immediately made reservations for lunch. We made sure we were hungry when we conquered Wasabi.

I took pictures of everyone’s plates instead. We didn’t get to eat everything on the buffet but we did out best to try most of the excellent food.

Each station had a different color of small plate that you put on a tray. I liked this style of plating. Food with sauce don’t spill on to other food. And it just looks prettier.

Dinner at Tapei 101’s food court

Fast food at Taipei 101-14
I can’t believe we stayed an entire day in Taipei 101’s mall considering I didn’t do any shopping in the super high end stores. We decided to eat an early dinner at the food court before going back to the hotel.

This outlet specialized in oyster pancakes and they had several combination sets that included the oyster pancake.

I saw a kid eating this at the next table and it appealed to me so I looked for the store that sold it. It was just across our table so I bought it.

It’s actually a hot plate with lots of veggies, beef and a raw egg which cooked very quickly from the heat of the plate. It was edible but again nothing special. The beef was tender enough but it wasn’t very tasty.

Taipei Day 1 – Shilin Night Market

After dropping our luggage at Hsuan Mei Hotel we headed to Shilin Night Market. my cousin Benjie was kind enough to drive us there even though he wasn’t very familiar with the place. Benjie stayed in the car with his daughter who was sleeping so he just told us where to go.
Shilin Night Market-1

We were quite disappointed with the small market. We later found out that we didn’t even enter the Taiwan’s biggest night market. We just went to the outer fringes of the market. No wonder! Anyway here are pictures of what we saw and ate in Shilin Night Market.

To my delight the first thing I saw were these grilled Taiwan sausages. They’re a very popular delicacy in Taiwan. These yummy sausages were slightly sweet and garlicky. 8 pieces cost NT$50.

There were several stalls with games and prizes just like in a fair.  The market had a mix of stores selling clothes, underwear, toys and novelty items. And of course there were the numerous food stalls.
