Villa Florence Hotel

Union Square
After my free breakfast at the club lounge of JW Marriott I went back to my room to pack for my move to the Villa Florence hotel. I only had 1 night of luxury stay at JW Marriott which I thoroughly enjoyed.

By 8 am I was all done with my packing. Since it was too early to move I decided to walk around Union Square and take a few pictures.

These were the only pictures I took because when I got to Macy’s I was shocked to find it open at 8 am for a special weekend sale! I immediately put my camera in my bag and went shopping. Believe it or not that was the only shopping I did in San Francisco. The rest of the time was spent eating and eating. Really.
Union Square-5

Villa Florence’s location was even better than JW Marriott. It was smack dab in Powell street right in the midst of all the stores. Right across was a giant Skechers store and a few more steps is Macy’s.

The hotel has been fully renovated. The room I got was much smaller but it suited my needs just fine. And the best thing was the free wifi access in the room and all the public places in the hotel.

The room was very clean and it had a window type air-conditioner with heater which I used. Yes it was summer in San Francisco and I needed the heater at night.

Another perk is their toiletries from L’Occitane. I really liked Villa Florence for it’s location and room. I wouldn’t mind staying here again. And their rates are very affordable, for San Francisco’s standard.

Dinner at Pizzeria Delfina

After checking in to my hotel, Ariel brought me to Pizzeria Delfina.
Pizza Delfina Salsiccia pizza

When I was doing research on the best pizza in San Francisco there were several names that kept popping up and Pizzeria Delfina was one of them. It was also Ariel’s favorite so that’s where he brought me.

Pizza Delfina

We went to the branch in nearby California St. It was close to 10 pm when we arrived and there was still a short line.

Pizza Delfina-1

When you enter the restaurant you have to list your name and how many are in your group on the blackboard.
Pizza Delfina-2

Pizza Delfina-3

They gave us a plate of grated parmesan cheese, red pepper flakes and dried oregano.
Pizza Delfina-7

My choice was the funghi pizza made with hen of woods mushroom, fontina cheese, panna (cream) and nepitella (an Italian herb). I was so excited since this was my first carb intake in 3 weeks.
Pizza Delfina funghi pizza
funghi pizza $17

I read that Pizzeria Delfina uses a gas oven instead of the traditional wood burning oven. They must have an oven capable of very high temperatures to make the crust evenly charred that resulted in a crunchy crust just the way I liked it.
Pizza Delfina funghi pizza-2

The topping tasted like very, very good cream of mushroom soup. The cheese and cream made for a very rich and yummy sauce. It was my dream topping!
Pizza Delfina funghi pizza-1

Ariel’s favorite was the salsiccia or housemade fennel Italian sausage with tomatoes, bell pepper, red onions and mozarella cheese.
Pizza Delfina Salsiccia pizza

The sausage was indeed good and I loved the big pieces of mozzarella cheese. I just found the pizza too wet. Ariel said it wasn’t normally like that. Maybe the tomatoes were too watery?
Pizza Delfina Salsiccia pizza-1

Yes I ate all of that! I really don’t eat the ends of the pizza specially when the edge of the crust is thick. Besides I was trying to minimize carbs and calories. Yeh right! I can’t believe we finished 2 pizzas. Granted it wasn’t that big, only 12 inches, and I didn’t eat all the filling crust.

I would have loved to walk back to the hotel but it was freezing. Ariel kept laughing at me since I wasn’t used to the cold windy weather. I wish I brought a winter jacket instead of a light sweater. I don’t know how many times I repeated that during the 3 days I was in San Francisco. Brrrrr…..

JW Marriott in San Francisco

JW Marriott
I arrived in San Francisco at 8:00 pm and my friend Ariel a.k.a. Niño picked me up from the airport in a limo. Talk about style! We then went to the hotel he booked for me. He works in the hotel industry and he got me a special rate at the JW Marriott in Union Square. Sadly, it was for one night only. Thanks Ariel!!!

This is Ariel in front of the hotel’s entrance. I loved the location of the hotel which was only 1 block away from Union Square.

My blog’s new look!

original look of my blog when I started it on Feb. 2009

Hi everyone,
After 20 months I finally have a new look for my blog. It’s still a work in progress and I’m still waiting for my new logo. What do you think of the design and color? Can you please answer the poll on the top right hand of the site? I would love to hear your comments and suggestions too. Thanks!

Leslie

This was the very first design when I started this blog. I didn’t know a thing about web sites and designing it. It took me a couple of months of frantic tinkering to come up with a better look from the free template.

This was the next look. Still from a free template but I changed the colors and other factors. The current look is still from a free template because I will never learn how to make a site from scratch.

PAL food Mnl-Sfo

amuse bouche

This is the start of my blog entries on my recent trip to the United States. I literally ate my way from the west to the east coast and back. Thanks again to all my cousins and friends who shared with me their favorite restaurants and for being great company. Join me on this journey as I feature all the places I tried in the US.

For me there is only one airline when traveling to the US and that’s Philippine Airlines. It’s the only plane that flies direct and non-stop to the west coast from Manila. That’s a 12.5 hour trip. And I don’t really have a choice since all my mileage is with PAL. If I want to ride business class for free then I have to ride PAL.

I’m so happy that their planes have been retrofitted with new recaro seats and their entertainment systems have many movie choices and you can choose what you want and when to watch it. And I’m happy to report that everything worked in order – the lights, seats, and video screen. Before one or all of those could be out of order even in business class!
Pal food Mnl-Sfo

This Boeing 747-400 had one design error. They used only 1 door for the entrance of all passengers. The entrance was right in front of a row of seats in business class.
Pal food Mnl-Sfo-1

Everyone had to pass through this row. The poor foreigner sitting there had to get up and temporarily sit somewhere because of all the people passing in front of her. Maybe PAL just wanted to maximize the number of seats in business class.
Pal food Mnl-Sfo-2

I sat on the same row but on the window side. I chose the exit row because when these seats recline you can’t get out to go to the bathroom without waking your seatmate.

The seafood terrine with orange dressing was very, very good. It didn’t have a fish taste at all. It was studded with pistachios which I enjoyed. The melon wasn’t sweet though.

I really love the food that PAL serves on their flight. The food reminded me of hotel food. The veal was fork tender and topped with a slice of baked apple and herb crust. The potatoes au gratin was cheesy and creamy.

There were 3 desserts – leche flan, fresh fruits and a selection of cheese with dried fruit and nuts. Yum! They even offered cups of Arce ice cream but I was too full already.

They even had snacks of sandwiches, chips or arroz caldo for those who couldn’t sleep. I wasn’t one of them. Thankfully I had a good sleep and woke up in time for breakfast.

The restaurant specialized in tapas but since there were 18 of us it was more realistic to order salads, pastas and meat and sharing it family style. All the salads were excellent and very creative.

Hamilo Coast Today

Hamilo Coast-1

Even though I don’t have a unit at Hamilo Coast nor am I a member I’ve been lucky to have seen the progress of it’s construction. The first time we went there in 2008 there was only the beach and some tents. Last year there was the addition of a pool and a club house near the beach. For pictures click here.  This year we were all blown away by how much has been added. It’s truly beautiful and a wonderful vacation spot in Nasugbu, Batangas which is just a few hours drive from Manila.

Instead of the beach, this year we went to the brand new country club.

Lunch at Bellini’s Italian Restaurant

ravioli tartufo

Jane and I wanted Mila to try Bellini’s Italian restaurant which is actually within walking distance from where she lives. What? She lives so near yet she’s never been to Bellini’s? Shocking!

I think everyone knows about Bellini’s, a restaurant tucked in a corner of Cubao expo. If you’re reading this and you’ve never been there read on. It’s time for you to go.

The interiors of the place can only be described as kitschy. There are  paintings of well known places in Italy on the walls, ceilings and every available surface in the restaurant.

This is the owner signor Roberto Bellini and one of his Italian speaking waiters. Signor Bellini doesn’t speak English so well so he taught his waiters to speak  Italian.

I think this is the only restaurant in Manila with a bell on each table for you to call your waiter.

The waiter rolled out this cart filled with different antipasti.

Signor Bellini insisted we try this fish marinated in olive oil and spices. It was a very mild and tasty dish.

I was on a no-carb diet so I asked Signor Bellini for his recommendations. Since Jane and Mila don’t know the terms “carbs and diet” I ordered this spinach ravioli in tartufo sauce for them. And since I love tartufo or truffles I couldn’t resist trying one ravioli. Well I had to taste it to write about it, right?

It was heavenly! The scent of the truffle oil was heady and the sauce was rich and creamy yet not cloyingly. The mild ham & spinach filling was the perfect vessel for the super tasty mushroom & truffle oil sauce. You must order this dish. MUST!

I would never order beef or pork in an Italian restaurant. I prefer to be surrounded  with pasta, risotto and pizza. But this pesky no-carb diet forced me to ask for their meat specialties.

The steak in pepper sauce was actually good. The meat was tender and the sauce was just right. It was a small serving though. It’s actually 1 1/2 portion size of meat if you’re on a diet. But for 3 people sharing it was too small.

We actually liked the pork steak more. It was simply marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, salt & pepper and then grilled. It was incredibly tender and juicy. The pork was about the same size as the steak. Small.

The pizza had a nice thin crispy crust. It was good but not the best pizza I’ve tried. Yes I had a slice. All for my blog. sigh.
pizza w: parma ham & arugula

We weren’t quite full after the ravioli, steak, pork steak and pizza so we asked the waiter what else we order. My 2 friends are skinny but they CAN eat. The waiter recommended the sea bass al forno. Since everything he recommended was good so far we went ahead and ordered the fish. Al forno means “from the oven” and the sea bass was baked inside foil.
sea bass al forno

sea bass al forno-1

Local sea bass is called apahap. I’ve never consciously had this fish before.  I say consciously because I don’t normally ask what kind of fish I’m eating.

The first bite of fish had me closing my eyes and swearing words I cannot write here. It was the best fish I’ve ever eaten! The texture of the fish was meaty yet so smooth and succulent. The simple sauce of olive oil, tomatoes, olives and herbs was just fabulous with the fish. There was a sour component to the dish and we were debating whether it was lemon juice or vinegar. Whatever it was it was just perfect. If I could eat this dish everyday I would gladly forgo meat. I’m serious. It’s that goooooooood!
sea bass al forno-2
sea bass al forno P700

The fish put our tummies over the top. We were very, very full after sucking every morsel of the fish leaving just the head and tail on the plate. But we still wanted to try their desserts. We’ve already tried their wonderful orange cake which Mila incidentally gave me before.

We tried their un-pc named Obama cake which was a dense, warm chocolate cake topped with whipped cream, caramel and chocolate sauces. It was just ok but it was quite expensive for a small slice. I still prefer their orange cake.
obama cake
obama cake P200

The panna cotta was just ordinary. It was literally plain heavy cream with gelatin. No flavorings at all.

Complimentary small glasses of their homemade sweet wine were given to us after our meal. It was way too sweet for me considering I love sweet wine.

So now you understand why a kitschy looking restaurant in a corner of Cubao has lasted for 11 years when most glitzy restaurants close within a year. Yes, it’s not cheap, you have to look for the place if you’re not familiar with Cubao, you might have a hard time parking, the ambiance won’t impress your date but I guarantee you will love the food. Well as long as you order the ravioli tartufo and sea bass al forno.m

I’m sure they have a lot of other good dishes in the menu but I will definitely order those two dishes when I go back. And when I do I’ll make sure I’m not on a no-carb diet and I will polish off that ravioli all by myself. No sharing please!

Dinner at Shantung

Shantung's fried crispy chicken

You would think that lunch at C’ Italian Dining was it for the day. Nooo…! After lunch we did some shopping at Puregold in Clark then at the outlet stores of Adidas and Nike. My dear friends, tired from all that shopping had Razon’s halo halo for merienda. It was late in the afternoon when we started our trip back to Manila. We got caught in rush hour traffic so what else could we do but stop for dinner. Deb suggested Shantung, a Chinese restaurant in West Avenue, Quezon City that’s been around for ages.

Shantung

Shantung-1

Shantung is not going to win any awards for interior design but it’s definitely the place to go for cheap but decent Chinese food. Some dishes were really, really good while some were quite disappointing. It was just like home cooking. That is if you have a Chinese chef who has hits and misses.
Shantung-5

My favorite was the Chinese style fried chicken. I liked the way they cut the chicken into small pieces so there was more crispy surface. It was simply spiced and that was the beauty of the dish.

I also loved the fried dumplings. It wasn’t fried like gyoza but in their own unique way 10 dumplings became 1 giant dumpling. It was crisp and the pork filling was juicy.
