Sightglass Coffee Roasters

Sightglass Coffee-10
I loved the Sightglass Coffee I had at Hooker’s Sweet Treats so much that I went to their store in the afternoon. It was a little less than a mile away from my hotel so I walked. I walk for coffee. There’s no distance to far or near for my beloved coffee.

After consulting the saved image of Google map’s directions to Sightglass on my iPhone several times I finally found the place (that’s the hardship of not having 3G on my iPhone). I was so happy the place was still open.

The huge warehouse like place was the actual place they roasted their coffee daily.

I bought 3 bags of coffee beans, the cheapest one cost $14 for 340 g. and the most expensive one cost $21. Yes they’re quite expensive but definitely worth it and I can’t wait to taste them.

I paid on this iPad with a Square card reader attached to swipe my credit card. I signed on the iPad. I found out that Sightglass Coffee was one of the first merchants to use this method because the CEO of Square, Jack Dorsey is also an investor in Sightglass Coffee as well as the inventor of Twitter.
Sightglass Coffee-9

Owl’s Howl is what I drank at Hooker’s and it’s one of the beans I bought. My trek to Sightglass Coffee was definitely worth it even though Ariel later told me that it wasn’t a good area for me to walk to by myself. I was quite jittery on my way back to the hotel since there were several unscrupulous looking subjects in the area but I simply walked faster and was ready to hit any would be attackers with my bag of coffee beans.

Hooker’s Sweet Treats

Hooker's Sweet Treats - salted caramels
I’m not a big fan of caramels but I’ve read so much about Hooker’s sea salted caramels from several online sources that I wanted to try it and see what all the fuss was about.

Hooker’s Sweet Treats was only a couple of blocks from Brenda’s and we really had to pass by Hyde Street on our way back to Union Square.

One of the reasons I wanted to go to Hooker’s was to have some Sightglass Coffee which they served. I ordered a large French Press for only $5. At the counter there was free sampling of Third Nut caramels which had cashews, almonds and pecans. It was buttery and not too sweet and I really liked the combination of nuts. I was satisfied with my little sampling of caramels.
Hooker's Sweet Treats-6

I wish I could have tried their sweet cheddar biscuits but I was still too full from lunch. Although I wanted to erase the unfortunate biscuit I had at Brenda’s.

The coffee was spectacular!!! I really loved the rich, dark and complex flavor of the coffee. It became my instant favorite and I immediately planned my trip to Sightglass coffee to buy their beans. They did sell beans at Hooker’s but I wanted to see Sightglass and get fresh roasted beans. The large French press was a good deal too. Ariel and I had two cups of coffee each.

I asked this guy making candies if he was Hooker 😀 sadly he wasn’t. He was very friendly though. We thought he looked Filipino but he said he was from Guam and was often mistaken for a Filipino.
Hooker's Sweet Treats-10

He was so nice to give us a couple of their famous sea salted caramels to try. These caramels were a bit firmer and sweeter than the Third Nut but I liked the dark chocolate coating and the contrast of the sea salt. If you like caramels then you will love these. They are definitely not your typical store bought caramels. I could taste the butter and it was very smooth and had a good chewy bite.

Lunch at Brenda’s French Soul Food

house salad with fried shrimp-1
This was lunch on my second day in San Francisco. See I still tried to be good with my diet. Ariel brought me to Brenda’s since I’ve read a lot of good things about this restaurant owned by Filipino chef Brenda Buenviaje.
Ariel warned me that there might be a line since Brenda’s is a popular restaurant despite it’s location in the Tenderloin district. Surprisingly we got a table right away.

After reading so many glorious reviews on Yelp I was so excited to try their crawfish beignet. They also had apple, chocolate and original flavors.

I knew the beignets were big since most people on Yelp warned readers on the size but I wasn’t prepared on how big it really was. It’s almost as big as my iPhone!
crawfish beignets-1

Beignet is basically a fried doughnut. That’s why I was expecting a light, airy dough. Instead this was dense, thick and almost like pan de sal. The crawfish filling on the other hand was creamy, very cheesy and spicy. It was really good.
crawfish beignets-2

This is what my beignet looked like after I ate only the filling. Ariel and I just ate one each and took the third one home or else we would have been too full for our entree.

Ariel ordered the house favorite, Hangtown Fry, which was crispy oyster and scrambled eggs. He ordered a cream biscuit since he knew I loved biscuits. I tried a piece of the oyster and was surprised to find the fried oyster to be cold. It seemed like it was pre-fried and sitting for a while waiting to be used for this dish.

I love, love biscuits and was willing to sacrifice my no carb diet to eat it since there are no biscuits in Manila (I don’t know why). The biscuit was huge and my first bite was ecstasy. It was light as air yet so flaky and crisp. It was really one of the best biscuits I’ve ever tried until I got to the middle part where it was almost raw and tasted so doughy. I ended up just eating the top and bottom parts of the biscuit.

I was going to ordered grilled chicken with my house salad but the last minute I decided to go with the fried shrimp and it was the right decision. The shrimp was coated with a cornmeal batter and was very crisp. I also liked the herbed cheese on the side. The creole mustard dressing was also different from my usual vinaigrette and I enjoyed my salad very much.

When we were there, TFC (The Filipino Channel) was shooting some pictures for their show Adobo Nation which featured chef Brenda Buenviaje. They asked for our permission to show our mugs on video and we said, “YES!”

Blue Bottle Coffee

Blue Bottle Coffee, Mint Plaza- gibraltar coffee
I am a coffee addict. I like espresso shots and plain old drip coffee. No lattes or cappuccinos for me. I became an addict when I started my Cohen diet. Desserts were a no-no so coffee became my dessert.

Before my trip to the United States I did some research on where I should go for coffee in San Francisco, one of the centers for Third Wave Coffee which is a movement that believes in sourcing the best coffee beans from around the world and roasting small batches of coffee to produce the most exquisite artisinal coffees. Armed with my list I vowed to hit as many of these coffee places as I could.

I arrived in San Francisco at 10:00 am and when I arrived at Hotel Nikko my room wasn’t ready. I didn’t want to eat a full meal since I was eating at Gary Danko that night. It was the perfect time to try the first in my list, Blue Bottle Coffee.

I went to the Mint Plaza branch which was only a few blocks from my hotel. It was a very pleasant walk since the weather was cool. When I got there I was surprised to see a line snaking out the door.

They had a simple lunch menu too.

I ordered a drip coffee also known as a pour over. This method was made popular in Japan and is now widely used in Third Wave coffee places.
Blue Bottle Coffee, Mint Plaza-7

I don’t know what beans was used for my drip coffee but the flavor was unlike anything I’ve tasted before. I would have enjoyed my coffee more if it were hot. It was lukewarm at best. The cold milk didn’t help at all even though I just put a really small amount. I guess the water they used to make my drip coffee wasn’t hot. It was really disappointing.

On the other hand the double chocolate cookie was out of this world fantastic. The cookie was thick but very chewy and the chocolate flavor was deep, dark and intense. There was salty and spicy notes too. It definitely made my list of the best cookies. It’s funny but I’m really a cheapo with food like I’ll never buy a $3 cupcake or a $2 macaron but for cookies or coffee price doesn’t matter. You will definitely see cookies and coffee a lot in my upcoming posts. I wish I bought another cookie to bring back to my hotel room.

They also had siphon coffee makers for their more expensive single origin beans.
Blue Bottle Coffee, Mint Plaza-10

I came to the Mint Plaza branch to see this $20,000 halogen siphon bar from Japan. I read that this is the only one in the United States and that the owners needed to get special training in Japan before they were allowed to buy this machine.
Blue Bottle Coffee, $20,000 siphon bar

It wasn’t the best start for my coffee adventure but I’m not letting that put me off. I was quite full and satisfied until dinner. By the way, the first picture is a coffee concoction called gibraltar. It’s not on the menu but you can order it. It’s actually a ristretto (super short espresso) with more milk. Thank you to the guy who ordered it and shared the information with me.

Dinner at Gary Danko

risotto with lobster, rock shrimp, shimeji mushroom & butternut squash-1
Going to the US while on a diet is not a good thing. Therefore I went on a semi-diet break. I vowed to try to eat as healthy as possible when I could. The diet can start again when I go back to Manila.

My first meal in San Francisco was dinner at one of the city’s best restaurant, Gary Danko. My good friend Ariel treated me to this special gustatory meal and I won’t ever forget it.
Gary Danko

Gary Danko-1

Gary Danko-2

Dining at Gary Danko was a different experience. They didn’t have an ala carte menu. You choose from a prix fixe menu and decide if you want a three, four or five course meal. Then you get to choose a dish from any of the categories. If you choose an item from appetizers to be your main course to be served as your main entree the serving size will be adjusted appropriately.

The sweet corn soup was not like your run of the mill corn soup. This barely had any thickener and the taste was all from pureed corn.

Ariel and I chose to have 3 courses each. Beforehand my cousins who have eaten at Gary Danko advised me not to order dessert as one of my 3 courses because we would be served petit fours.

I was tempted to order the seared foie gras for my main course. I can just imagine how big the foie gras would be since the appetizer portion was pretty generous too. It was quite thick and as expected the flavor and texture was just sublime. But what really blew my mind was the caramelized red onion that was served with it. It was so, so sweet and just perfect with the foie gras and apple slices. I wish I asked for more of the onions.

My cousin raved about the risotto so that’s what I ordered for my second course even though it was all carbs. The risotto had generous chunks of lobster and shrimp. It was incredibly creamy and buttery. My only complaint was it was too salty. I thought it was because I wasn’t used to salty food anymore because of my diet but when Ariel tried it he agreed with me. I told the server about it and he didn’t say anything nor did he offer to change it. That was quite a disappointment. It would have been a perfect dish.

For our main course Ariel and I both chose the double pork entree. The roast pork belly was just ok. The skin wasn’t crispy at all. I wonder what Americans would say if they get to try our lechon kawali with super crispy skin. After eating the pork belly I was already too full.

I forced myself to eat a piece of the pork tenderloin. I was amazed at how tender it was. The texture didn’t even taste like pork. It was just exquisite. It was prepared so simply that the natural flavor of the pork was the star and not some fancy and complicated sauce.  The sauce was sweet yet tangy and ended with some heat from the jalapeño. I had to ask for a doggy bag for the remaining pork.

Ariel had more control than me when it came to choosing the right food. He ordered seafood for his first two courses. A large piece of the most perfectly cooked lobster was served with a simple salad with flavors that burst into your mouth. If I didn’t order foie gras this would be my choice the next time I eat at Gary Danko.

I didn’t think fish could taste so good as this striped bass did.

When the petit fours arrived the server asked if I would like to pack them up too since I couldn’t finish my pork. I vehemently exclaimed, “Oh no, we could definitely finish dessert!”

And finish it we did. I was glad the portions were tiny, just a biteful really. I painstakingly cut up each piece in two so both of us could try everything. Let me tell you they were all fantabulous!!
petit fours-1

My favorites were the tart lemon square, candied orange rind and the pecan pie.

As a final treat the server gave me and other women a gift of pumpkin cake. So that’s two times the dessert and we still had 3 courses of food.
pumpkin cake

It’s too bad I misplaced my pumpkin cake so I wasn’t able to try it. I think I left it on the front desk of Hotel Nikko when I went to have my room key reactivated. Darn it.
pumpkin cake-1

It was a bit pricey for a three course meal costing $69 but the servings were a good size and we got an amuse bouche as well as one of the best petit fours I haven’t eaten. Other than the salty risotto it was one of the finest meals I’ve ever eaten in the United States.

There was a huge flat screen tv but unfortunately the signal wasn’t all that clear. Another inconvenience was the location of the outlets down below and behind the desk. Good thing I brought my portable extension cord which I bought from Amazon. The Monster travel power strip could be used in countries with both 110v and 220v. This power strip is invaluable when you have to charge your phone, iPad, and camera at the same time.

This was one of the best and biggest bathrooms I’ve ever encountered. Usually I don’t like over the counter sinks/lavatories but I loved this round and high sided sink. When I washed my face I just leaned my forearms on the edge of the bowl without having to bend too low. As a result there was no water splash on the counter. Fab!

Cathay Pacific Flight – Manila to San Francisco

Cathay Pacific Low Fat/Low Cholesterol Meal (LFML)- Long Haul lunch-2
As you’ve read from my previous post I’m currently in the USA for a vacation. I didn’t really plan to go to the US again after only a year but since I got a free ticket from HSBC I thought it would be fun to experience the Thanksgiving holiday for the first time with my cousins in the east coast.

It was my first time to take Cathay Pacific economy class to San Francisco. They were quite strict about not allowing upgrades whether through miles or cash. I really liked dealing with Cathay Pacific’s web site where I was able to check in online a day before my departure as well as choose my seat and my meal. I even printed my boarding pass. All these things I can’t do with Philippine Airlines, the carrier I usually use on my flights to the US.

Even in economy there were a lot of neat features that I really liked.

Even on the short flight to Hong Kong where I had to catch a connecting flight to San Francisco I was able to watch a couple episodes of Modern Family.
Cathay Pacific Economy-1

My most valuable accessories for the long haul flight were my iPod nano which I put in a cheap but cute watch strap I bought in Greenhills and the Audio-Technica ANC 23 noise cancelling headphones which Rome gave to me. The headphones used one AAA battery which lasted more than 10 hours and it was so effective in blocking out the engine noise as well as all the ambient noise in the plane. I even used it for watching movies since it came with an airplane audio adapter plug.
iPod Nano & Audio-Technica ANC23

For this entire flight I pre-ordered a Low Fat/Low Cholesterol Meal. I wish they had a low carb meal option instead. The bread was hard and the minced chicken filling was dry. I picked out what little chicken there was and ate that. So so sad and hungry.
Cathay Pacific Low Fat:Low Cholesterol Meal (LFML)

My flight from Manila to Hong Kong was ok except for one flaw. I only had 55 minutes to connect to my SFO flight in Hong Kong and the plane left Manila 40 minutes late!! I was quite calm because the flight attendant assured me that the plane will wait for me. But to be sure they wanted to move me to business class after my sad, sad meal so I can leave the plane first. Thank goodness business class was full so they had no choice but to move me to first class!!!

I got the chance to sit in Cathay Pacific’s Boeing 777-300’s AWESOME first class suite if only for 30 minutes. Time flew by sooooo fast.
Cathay Pacific Boeing 777-300ER First Class

Never mind that I looked like some gauche provincial lass but the minute I got to first class I whipped out my camera and started taking pictures fast. It could be the only time I would get to ride in first class unless I manage to rack up tons of mileage on Asia Miles.

The bathroom was big and spacious too.
Cathay Pacific Boeing 777-311

Cathay Pacific Boeing 777-312

Luckily the flight to San Francisco was delayed by 30 minutes so I didn’t have to run like crazy. I took my time walking and got to the gate when they just started boarding. I even managed to buy a snack at Pacific Coffee to make up for the sad, sad breakfast.

On the long haul leg I paid US$100 to get an extra leg room seat. Sitting here has it’s pros and cons.
Pro:
1. You get to stretch your legs and get up anytime without having to bother anyone or anyone bothering you.

Cons:
1. The tv comes out from below and the remote control is located on the side, making the seat width a little smaller.
2. Since there is no seat in front of you there is no place to store your bag or shoes under a chair. I was lucky that there wasn’t anyone sitting beside me so I was able to put my bag on the seat.
3. The convenience outlet wasn’t conveniently accessible as opposed to the picture above. It was located way down in the middle of two seats.
4. There isn’t a cup holder or a hook.
Cathay Pacific economy exit row

5. You are located near the bathroom. It’s a plus if you go to the bathroom often since you will always know if no one is using it.
Cathay Pacific economy exit row-1

But it’s also a big NO since there’s always somebody standing in your open space lining up for the bathroom.
Cathay Pacific economy exit row-2

Next time I will choose the window seat which is for free since there is some blockage but the remaining space is still quite sufficient for easy movement. With more cons than pros do I regret paying for extra leg room? My answer is no. I still appreciated the freedom to move about and not be bothered.

I’ve read several complaints about the economy seat on travel forums. The new economy seat has a fixed back that doesn’t recline. Instead the back portion simply slides down partially giving you the illusion of reclining. It was totally useless but I didn’t really mind it. My biggest problem was the seat and back support. It was a good thing I brought a small inflatable back pillow which helped out a lot. I also used the pillow of the empty seat to sit on. My butt was sore from the thin cushion of the seat.

The ONLY advantage of ordering a special meal was you get to be served first. By the time I finished eating the rest of the passengers were only starting to be served their meals. This meant I had first dibs on the bathroom. This was a big help specially when we were about to land. The lines for the bathroom seemed endless.

I must admit that I never liked the food at Shang Palace as much as Summer Palace in Edsa Shangri-la Hotel. But I must admit the food was fantastic! Well some dishes I liked much more than the others. I conveniently and momentarily forgot my diet for one night.

My hands down favorite were the super crunchy, super fresh, super duper uber yummy fried prawns. The mayonnaise dressing was light and barely sweet unlike other restaurants which tend to drown the salad in super sweet mayonnaise mixture. Ssshhhh I ate 5 huge prawns! I loved, loved, loved it!

Too bad I didn’t find any white meat since everyone said the chicken was good. It was smart of them to serve the lemon sauce on the side.

The rest of the Peking duck was minced into a filling for the lettuce cups. I really liked this second way much better. The duck was very fragrant and in my opinion it didn’t need any hoisin sauce at all. It was very tasty as it was.

Dinner at Agave Mexican Cantina

Recently our HS classmate, Lily came home from California after many, many years. We met up with her for drinks and some Mexican chow at Agave Mexican Cantina at The Fort.

The place was surprisingly full considering we arrived at 6:30 pm on a Friday night. The restaurant/bar had a good mix of locals and expats.

Nachos is one of my favorite foods ever. I couldn’t resist eating more than a couple of chips and it was so delicious. There was just the right amount of each ingredient coating the crunchy tortilla chips.

I found the baby squid too sweet with the barbecue sauce overwhelming the delicate and tender squid.

The bottomless margarita was a good deal which some of my friends took advantage of.

The steak quesadilla was the most popular variant.

We ordered this huge platter with an assortment of their most popular treats. My favorite was the beef skewers which was so, so, tender and flavorful.

My dinner was this taco salad. The grande wasn’t really that big. I had the corn, guacamole, olives and black beans removed to fit my diet. Not bad at all.

They really cook beef well at Agave. We all ate the steak and chicken without the tortilla wrapper.

Agave turned into a bar midway to our dinner. The lights went down and the music became louder. Eventually we had to move to a coffee place since we couldn’t hear each other. The food was pretty good and the atmosphere was fun.
